It happened. The American International Women's Association of Venice held their first party, their first Carnival Party and their first profile raising, fund raising event. All in the cause of two very worthwhile organisations supporting women in situations of domestic violence.
The party was held on Saturday 3rd February 2024 against stiff competition from the usual suspects in town. But the mix of a reasonable ticket price, great location and even better music and catering proved to be a winner with 70+ guests in attendance. Local Jazz band Venice Jazz Friends provided a fantastic musical backdrop to the first half of the evening after which DJ Agi really got the dance floor jumping - so much so that no one wanted the last song to come around. The theme of the evening was a Voyage of Discovery and guests were led from a watery entrance way with photo opportunity via a series of maps, leading the guest around the ancient world of Marco Polo, to the bar and band. The final discovery was the Artisanal Market of six local craft makers hosted on the top floor of our venue, Spazio Levante. Midway through the evening, the raffle was held and 820 Euro was raised to be split between Centro antiviolenza Estia a Venezia e Mestre e Riviera del Brenta – Centro Antiviolenza Iside Centro Antiviolenza e Sportelli Antiviolenza | Comune di Venezia. Thanks to everyone who helped make the party such a success from ticket sales to promotion to the raffle to the decor team. See you next year.

If you are in danger or need, both sites offer emergency phone numbers. The January Meeting was hosted by member, Adair, who took members on a Bacaro Tour of less well known spots in the city whilst giving some wonderful stories and insights along the way. Anyone who gets to go on a tour with Adair in her professional capacity is in for a treat.
Everyone met at Campo San Giacomo Di Rialto and the tour went from @Wenice.Venezia to @Rosticceriagislon, @AlPortego and @BacaroRisorto (All Instagram). It was a grey, damp January Sunday morning but spirits were raised by the delicious food and, well, spirits. You can't go on a Bacaro Tour without the odd Prosecco, Spritz or Ombra, surely? The December meeting was hosted by member, Constance, at her home. It was a very joyful affair with a number of people soon to depart for the Christmas break and member Brigitte travelling back to Australia to finish her thesis. We hope to see her again soon.
Constance organised a Charity Silent Auction, to which members brought a wide selection of items. It went very well and 175Euros was raised on the night. The money will go to the Association's chosen organisations working on behalf of Women and Children caught in violent situations (See separate new story). Everyone had so much fun, that we all forgot to take photos but Brigitte caught a funny one at the end of the evening! November was the occasion for the club's annual excursion out of the city and onto Terra Firma. The destination this year was the Prosecco Hills around Valdobbiadene (a place the writer will finally get to say correctly one day!). The weather turned out perfect after a series of epic storms in the week before and the club is grateful to drivers Davide and Bruce for making the transit so easy.
The first stop was at Colline Guizzette where the family were very welcoming and offered a great feast of snacks to accompany their fine, small production Proseccos. Many of the vineyards have been handed down over multiple generations and it's great to see the next generation so excited about their family business. And to meet Eros, the dog. Stop two was a break at Osteria Senz'Oste, a remarkable idea to offer products up on the vineyard hillside in vending machines. The area was full of hikers taking a much needed rest and the sun shone down on our members as we explored both the area and the offerings. Most people also got a souvenir glass goblet to take home and reuse as well. Last stop was Ca Salina where Gregorio gave the group a detailed and fascinating history of how the production of Prosecco has developed over the years before offering us tastings of nine, yes NINE different wines. The conversation was in full flow by this stage and members bought wine at both locations. As the sun set in a fabulous tramonto (was that also a bit of the aurora borealis that occurred very dramatically all over the Veneto later that evening?), the return journey over a very full Piave River took only just over an hour. It's wonderful to know such a place exists so close to the city of Venice. The weather played ball for the planned outdoor meeting this October - a morning of cleaning the barene in front of the island of Sant Erasmo followed by a picnic on the beach of Bacan. It almost felt warm enough to go swimming with the scirocco breezes and blue skies. In fact a few members became more intimate with the lagoon mud than they expected when boots decided to get stuck as we worked.
A group of 8 members were transported to the marshland islands by Ilaria Pagin of Spazio Levante who kindly offered her boat for the morning. The group collected 8 bags of general waste and 8 more of plastic waste in about two hours. Autumn was chosen for this activity as a quiet time that would hopefully not disturb the local wildlife population too much. After depositing the waste in appropriate locations on Sant Erasmo and cleaning the boat and each other of the lagoon fango (Italian for mud and such a great word!), the members reunited on the beach next to Al Bacan restaurant where a nice picnic was supplemented by well deserved drinks from the bar! The American International Women’s Association of Venice is very proud to lend support to the Anti-Violence Center of the Municipality of Venice; this morning, AIWAV representatives were given a tour of the center headquarters in Mestre and donated 65lbs of women and children’s clothing for local victims of domestic violence.
The center offers protection and support for women who suffer or are exposed to violence, resulting in physical, sexual, psychological or economic harm or suffering. There are also outreach centers in Cannaregio and Lido as well as Mestre. If you or someone you know needs their help, please do not hesitate to contact the kind, compassionate, and multi-lingual staff at 041 274 4222 (24hr hotline) or cell on WhatsApp active Tuesdays from 9am-5pm and Thursdays from 9am-1pm 366 930 8389 The AIWAV September Meeting was held around San Zaccaria with a visit to the church and in particular it's flooded crypt. Afterwards everyone gathered at Bacaro Risorto where the management made a nice deal of a drink and two cicchetti inclusive. There wasn't any particular news discussed but it was nice to meet a couple of new prospective members
Within the What's App groups however, Constance has done a great job of collecting all the outstanding current subscriptions and Julia finished consulting on the club constitution. She also arranged a vote to confirm the constitution and published it on the website. The August Meeting of the American International Women's Association of Venice was held at member, Brigette's home near San Nicolo dei Mendicoli. It involved a vist to the church where Brigette talked about plague, Laura talked about fallen women and Adair talked about lost treasure.
At the meeting, Laura and Adair presented the new programme of meetings for 23/24 which are themed to include meetings at member's homes, special guest meetings, outdoor activites, give back to the community days, cultural events, a trip outside of the city and an Annual Ball at Carnival. Members Constance and Nicole also brought up the large amount of donations collected on behalf of the women's centre for abused women in Mestre (more to follow in another news post) and Constance was thanked for her sponsoring of this initiative. Keeping up with a tradition from recent years, Hotel Ca Sagredo hosted an Independence Day party in their spectacular reception rooms. Members Constance, Marly and Nicole attended and the evidence of the images suggests it was a great event. Please find below a brief visual summary of the current Leadership Team of the American International Women's Association of Venice. Please note that it is just an image of the email addresses (to avoid spam). Thank you to everyone who voted. I hope we are able to serve you well.
The July meeting was held on the Lido. Worries about the stormy weather continuing were alleviated when the sun finally came out again and an intrepid group gathered for margheritas and nachos at the Chiosco Cantina Beach. This was an informal meeting but celebrated the confirmation of the new Leadership Team by member vote.
The June meeting was kindly hosted by member Amy Burke at her Cannaregio therapy studio. This was one of the first times the club has had to set limits on the number of people able to come. This is a testament to the growing membership. Thanks to everyone who accommodated to the needs of the space.
Amy made a short presentation regarding her life and history of working within the Chiropractic discipline. Questions were asked and the subject ranged around a variety of health related subjects. Amy's visual description of how she sees her work heping people was particularly appreciated (See below!) After the meeting, a large group of members plus at least one who couldn't make the meeting but was available later went to the Indian on Fondamenta Ormesini. Ital India produced a wonderful selection of delicious dishes and thanks again to Amy for organising it. It's great to eat something other than the (fabulous but ubiquitous) fish menu in Venice. Just to reiterate that the June Monthly Meeting date has changed from 1st to the 8th June 2023, at 7pm in Cannaregio. If you haven't received an email, please check you SPAM/JUNK folder. If you are not currently a member please email americanwomenvenice at gmail dot com with your phone number for What's App and where you heard about us.
Thanks to member, Amy Burke, for being so flexible about the hosting date and see you there. Firstly, thanks to all the people who have put their names in the hat for Leadership Roles. Following on from some discussions at the last meeting and previous conversations on the same subject, there has been the addition of an extra role as follows: Resources Coordinator. The Resources Coordinator will coordinate, compile and keep up to date a file directory of useful contacts and resources in Venice and its surrounding area as agreed by the members. The role requires a detail orientated person who doesn't mind a bit of administration. Some creative thinking involved. Secondly, re the Events Coordinator role(s), the leadership team appreciates that this role isn't clearly defined at the moment. As such it might be daunting to think about taking on this role. To clarify, current events mainly consist of the club monthly meeting so it seems better to call the current role: Monthly Meetings Coordinator. The Meetings Coordinator will be responsible for researching and confirming future venues for the monthly meeting (shared between member venues and interesting locations around the city). This role requires curiosity about the city/club membership and what they have to offer along with organisational skills. If there is interest, there could be a separate role as follows: Member Communication Coordinator. The Meeting Comms Coordinator's role consists of communicating the details of upcoming events to the membership via email, What's App, Facebook and the club website. This role requires communication with the Meetings and Membership coordinators and a degree of planning. Another option to combining the roles is that two people could apply specifically as a pair and share the roles as it suits them. Events Coordinator (s). This should probably be considered as a future role(s) as the club develops. In addition to the Club Meetings (which generally consist of club business and something informative or fun!), the club would like to start organising other events. Sports. Cinema club. Non-member friends and family events. Etc. These could be organised by the Meetings 'team' but additional subject specific volunteers are greatly welcomed. Fortunately the unseasonal April weather in Venice broke such that the day of our May meeting was sunny and warm and the barbeque planned at member, Julia's house was a great success. There were some typical US style dishes and the usual local Prosecco consumed. It is a privilege to have outside space in Venice so it's lovely to be able to share it.
Those present also talked about some of the upcoming developments for the club. In particular there was a fruitful discussion about how to pursue with the inclusion of new members to help run the various aspects of the club and the development of a resources area for members to advertise their own talents and for trusted sources to be able to present their goods and services to the members. The post detailing the plans for the leadership structure for the club going forward can be found below. To help facilitate the process and give regular updates, member Amy Tobias has kindly volunteered to step forward and administer the comms and voting process.
The current leadership greatly appreciate her offer to help. More info to follow, particularly in the What's App groups. All comments and suggestions are welcome from members at this stage. It's your club. Many thanks to the members, new, old and prospective who came along to the latest AIWAV meeting at the beginning of April. It was a squally night so it was gratifying to see, at final count, seventeen people sitting around the table at the Flying Dutchman (Osteria L'Olandese Volante). This was also after a last minute change of venue so well done to everyone who found us both at the bar and earlier at the Fondaco Dei Tedeschi.
The club welcomed four new members and once again, it was humbling to hear all the different stories of how and why our members have made their home in Venice - the most recent being two and a half weeks ago and the longest, more than thirty. It might be nice to do a series of posts one day that document these magical journeys. The photos below were taken before everyone arrived but the mood depicted continued throughout the evening - even if various people ended up sitting in the chair with the permanent drip from the umbrella above! Hopefully it will be warmer and sunnier in May. Belated congratulations to member Rochelle who celebrated her marriage to Cristian in March. Fellow members Toma and Julia were present and report that it was a joyful occasion celebrating two people very much in love. Personally, I adore that blue dress! (Laura). AIWAV is looking forward to catching up with Rochelle when she is back in town to hear all the news.
Learn about the possible new structure of AIWAV Leadership.
We also will feature one role a week in the WhatsApp group. AIWAV Roles and Descriptions Coming out of our transition phase, the AIWAV is slowly beginning to take shape and define roles and functions within the Association. The current voluntary Board has discussed the idea of a horizontal Leadership Team as opposed to an official Board of Directors or Governing Board. We are all amazing women and do not want any type of ruling hierarchy – we also know semantics matter. Our suggestions for the Leadership Team are below, and we have three ideas for the creation:
The descriptions on the roles are below. Additionally, now that we have more Members (and wonderfully active ones at that), we hope to form committees under each Leadership Team role. Committees will be led by one of the Leadership Team, and there can be more that 1 Committee for each type of action. For example, guided by the Events Coordinator – there could be a general Events Committee or multiple, such as Charity, Fundraising, Sports, Arts, etc. Leadership Team (note: for the time being and size of the Association, it is possible that 1 Member may hold more than 1 position)
[1] The usage of “Members” entails a paid member of the Association. In celebration of International Women's Day on the 8th March, AIWAV arranged to meet at the Lee Miller Man Ray photography exhibition at Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti where the photographer's work has been reassessed as an iconic innovator in her own right. This was followed by afternoon tea and drinks at member, Anora's home. A number of new prospective members were welcomed and the developments on the AIWAV website were discussed. AIWAV would like to thank Anora for her hospitality and to everyone who contributed food or drink. The next meeting will be on 13th April.
www,rowvenice.org has offered resident lessons to AIWAV members at a special rate so members Marly, Nicole and Laura took advantage of the chance to get on the water on a grey but still February day. First timers, Marly and Nicole both did a great job, standing up and facing forward as the beautiful wooden Batella Coda Di Gambero (Shrimp tailed boat) glided down the canals of the Cannaregio sestiere (borough) and out into the Venetian lagoon.
At one point, a huge flock of cormorants flew over the rowers. This is an extraordinary phenomenon that only happens in Winter when the birds come closer into the city and hunt for food together. A short video can be found on Laura's instagram feed @laurajessicapritchard. Ah the end of the row, the general opinion was that everyone was looking forward to the next lesson and everyone thanked Jane from Row Venice for her expertise. FYI more places could be available for other members later in March/Early April. On 2nd February, before the madness of Venice Carnival set it, the membership of AIWAV gathered at the lovely home of member Val Oliveira. Two new members, Tamela and Jo-Ann were welcomed and members of the Leadership Team described some of the behind the scenes organisation that has been ongoing since the Autumn. At the end of the evening Val introduced the other members to some of her stunning photography work, more of which can be found at:
